The Theatre of Comedy 1985 - 1991

Leading playwright, producer and director Ray Cooney formed this company in 1983 with many top names in British theatre including John Alderton, Pauline Collins, Judi Dench, Donald Sinden, Michael Williams, Bernard Cribbins, Maureen Lipman, Julia McKenzie, Tom Conti,
Richard Briers, Leonard Rossiter and Leslie Phillips.

Leslie Lawton joined the company in 1985 first as an actor in the West End run of TWO INTO ONE and then, when Thelma Holt moved on he became the Artistic Administrator. He was responsible for the production of many subsequent successes including the Olivier Award winners WHEN WE ARE MARRIED and OUT OF ORDER and was responsible for finding, developing and workshopping new work.

He also directed the Company's first "alternative" comedy THE WOW SHOW at the Wyndham's Theatre and worked with Rowan Atkinson on the very first Comic Relief event.
